The Private Pilot License (PPL)

The Private Pilot License is the gateway for anyone wishing to pursue aviation; it is the license that can be built onto with additional ratings allowing you to fly at night or even in the clouds…

With training at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, you will benefit from our highly experienced Instructors and fleet of aircraft available.

The Course

Students will initially begin to learn the basics of how an aircraft takes flight with a practical approach to controlling and piloting an aircraft; you will learn how to climb, descend and make turns before moving onto learning how to take-off and land the aircraft.

Once you are ready your instructor will send you ‘solo’ and you will experience one of the most unforgettable moments in your life.

You will also learn about Navigation from planning, air traffic control, emergency procedures and land at other airfields culminating in a ‘cross-country’ flight of 150 Nautical Miles before doing the same yourself; allowing you to build confidence at the controls.

Tests & Examinations

Alongside the practical elements of the Private Pilot License course, you will learn and then undertake nine examinations including: Air Law, Operational Procedures, Human Performance and Limitations, General Navigation, Principles of Flight, Meteorology, Flight Planning and Performance, Communications and Aircraft General Knowledge.

For a practical assessment of your skills you training will end with a full ‘PPL Skills Test’ with a CAA Flight Examiner where you will demonstrate the skills you have learned.

After you’ve gained your license you can then hire an aircraft or undertake further training such as a Night Rating or learn to fly on instruments.

Light Aircraft Pilot License (LAPL)

The Course

The Light Aircraft Pilot License (LAPL) is a more recreational version of the Private Pilot License (PPL), the qualification and license is designed for those now wishing to pursue any commercial pilot training and for those just wishing to fly for recreation.

Students will initially begin to learn the basics of how an aircraft takes flight with a practical approach to controlling and piloting an aircraft; you will learn how to climb, descend and make turns before moving onto learning how to take-off and land the aircraft.

Once you are ready your instructor will send you ‘solo’ yourself and you will experience one of the most unforgettable moments in your life.

You will then learn about Navigation from planning, air traffic control, emergency procedures and land at other airfields culminating in a ‘cross-country’ flight of 150 Nautical Miles before doing the same yourself; allowing you to build confidence at the controls.

The course requires a minimum of 30 hours of flight training.

For a practical assessment of your skills you training will end with a full ‘LAPL Skills Test’ with a CAA Flight Examiner where you will demonstrate the skills you have learned.

Night Rating

Night Flying is spectacular; at night you will be able to see the blinding city lights below illuminating the skies and generally affords an entirely different experience to daytime flying.

The Pre-requisite for the Night Rating course is the Private Pilot License.

The Course

You will initially become familiarised with flying at night with the differences in human factors adapting yourself to the dark environment.

Take-off and Landing is completely different and you’ll learn to take-off and land with the runway lights at Prestwick before the Instructor asks for some of them to be turned off; simulating emergency procedures.

You will then learn to navigate at night using key landmarks, shapes of cities and maps at night.

The course finishes with a solo night flight demonstrating your abilities of the take-off and landing phases.

Tests & Examinations

The course is assessed by your highly qualified flying instructor throughout finishing with a solo flight.
